PYIN: News that leaves room for the rest of your day

You open your phone to check a headline. One story leads to another, then to the comments, and suddenly an intentional five minutes becomes half an hour spent arguing with strangers.

We wanted a calmer way to keep up with what is happening. Something you can actually finish reading, close, and put away.

That is why we built PYIN News. It is a calm news reader for Omarchy, and it is now approved and published in the Omarchy plugin marketplace.

Anchored in language and presence

In Secwepemctsín, PYIN means "now."

The name connects this project directly to our language and territory here in Chu Chua. It also reflects the core purpose of the app: helping you understand what matters right now, with plenty of time left for the rest of your day.

At chuchua.tech, we talk a lot about building technology with purpose. As an Indigenous-owned business based in Chu Chua, British Columbia, we care deeply about people having a real say in the tools they use and the information they share. That thinking matters in big data systems, but it matters in small, everyday tools too.

Designed to be finished

Most modern software is engineered to keep you hooked on an infinite scroll. PYIN is engineered to let you go.

Here is how it works:

  • Selected sources: You choose the news sources and subjects that actually interest you.

  • Finite daily editions: You pick a reading edition sized for roughly five, fifteen, or thirty minutes.

  • A true end point: Unlike endless social feeds, PYIN has a last story. You reach it, close the app, and get back to your family, your work, or whatever needs your attention.

  • Complete privacy: Your reading history and preferences stay locally on your computer. There are no advertisements, no tracking, and no data harvesting.

  • Optional AI summaries: If you want help understanding a complex article, you can request an AI summary. This is entirely optional, and you choose the AI service that processes the text for that request.

Contributing to open-source innovation

We built PYIN for Omarchy, an operating system for your computer built on Linux. Omarchy is exploring what developers call an "agentic" operating system. In everyday terms, it gives AI assistants tools to help you adjust your computer, understand a complex problem, or build something you need.

That interests us because it gives people more ways to shape the technology around them. A small team can try an idea, refine it, and share a useful tool with others.

PYIN is our contribution to that community. We have made its code openly available so people can learn from it, suggest improvements, and build on top of it. The Omarchy maintainers also helped us refine the app through their review process, and we are grateful for the time and care they put into that work.

Built in Chu Chua, shared with the world

Seeing something built right here in Chu Chua become available to a wider global community is a milestone we are happy to share. Technology does not need to come from a giant corporate tech hub. It can be built right here at home, grounded in our values and respect for human rhythm.

We hope PYIN makes catching up on the news a little easier, a lot calmer, and leaves you with a little more time for the people around you.

Are you using Omarchy? We would love for you to give PYIN a try. Let us know how it fits into your daily routine and what features would make it even more useful.
